Fix for Dell Inspiron 15R 5537 Hibernate and Sleep Wake Restart Issue

So I have had a Dell Inspiron 15R 5537 for quite a while. It is a beast of a machine and you can read my review for Dell Inspiron 15R 5537 here

Since day 1 of owning this laptop, I had been observing that whenever I hibernate or put my laptop to sleep and try to wake it by hitting the power button, it pretty much does a restart and at times, I get a Blue Screen of Death with an error code video_dxgkrnl_fatal_error. There really haven’t been too many articles for Fix for Dell Inspiron 15R 5537 Hibernate and Sleep Wake Restart Issue

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the Dell Inspiron 5537 drivers from Website, refreshed and reset my Windows 8.1 and even go for a complete format and OS Reinstall. None of them seemed to have solved my problem

The problem I identified was that when I disable the AMD Graphics from the Manage Computer snap-in, I was able to Hibernate or Sleep and wake without any issues. However, with that, I lose the whole point of having 2GB of dedicated AMD graphics on my laptop and the fact that I could not change the screen brightness.

I have finally found a set of steps which seemed to have worked flawlessly for me.

  1. Uninstall the drivers using the AMD CleanUp Utility
  2. Restart the laptop.
  3. Install Driver Chipset. Do not restart the laptop here.
  4. Install Driver Intel Video card drivers. Windows 8.1 will complain that you already have newer drivers. Just overwrite the drivers and install the ones you just downloaded.
  5. Restart the laptop.
  6. Install the driver from AMD Video card drivers.
  7. Restart the laptop

I am sure this will solve the Windows 8.1 Hibernate or Sleep Wake up issue that you might be facing. Please feel free to drop by any comments and let us all know whether this fix worked for you or not

The above steps seemed to have given me a Fix for Dell Inspiron 15R 5537 Hibernate and Sleep Wake Restart Issue

  1. Your solution helped me with sleep/wake up problem on the same laptop. I tried few methods on the different forums, but no one solved it.

    Thank you.

      • hi, i am also using Dell Inspiron 15R 5537 (ATI Radeo HD 8850M) and tried several methods given all oven the net, but out of two options (solution for wake problem or smooth gaming) only one seems to work at a time. As mentioned by Mr. Paul your method solved his sleep/wake problem, but what about the game performance??? As you both had tried the given method so can you confirm that games are also working sooth? As currently, after hours of testing i finally found a method for smooth games but not for wake problem. Please suggest. Thanks

    • The fix in the blog post above did fix the brightness control. I was unable to change brightness when the AMD graphics was disabled from the Device Manager. You want to check whether AMD is ENABLED in Device Manager

  2. I bought this laptop on may and I share you’re point of view, it’s awesome; recently I upgraded to 8.1 and the system decided to restart whenever i close the lid; anyway, this solve the problem, thank you.

  3. Hello I had the same problem with the laptop I bought in Turkey. Used to have blue screen problem aswell during the times I used windows 8. However after updating to 8.1 my laptop could not wake up after sleep mode. And being a person who does not know much about computers and their sytems it has been driving me crazy and your solution here seemed to me the most easiest and quickest one..

I have implemented all the steps and tried to put the laptop in sleep mood and later it worked very well just like before and no problem with brightness settings. Worked well for me ! Thanks for the solution

  4. While applying the fix, I received an error message saying “The driver being installed is not validated for this computer. Please obtain the appropriate driver from the computer manufacturer. Setup will exit.”. What should i do?

    Thanx and Rgds.

  5. Thank you so very much, your method worked for me! The beautiful thing about your method is that it is so straight forward that you don’t have to be a computer geek to get around following it! Thanks again.

  6. Hi Chetan,
Thanks for post, you have saved my life! I had been reinstalling DELL graphic drivers at 15R 5537 to and fro many weeks since I my laptop had installed Windows 8.1….. Poor Windows and I was angry on DELL too, how they could not fix the problem with driver incompatibility …. however, now I am back in times before Windows 8.1 with sleep and wake up issue. Everything works perfectly, so thank you for post. A question. I have set manual updates on my laptop but anyway ones I decide to install updates manually ( Windows updates included) do the updates overwrite the current installed drivers and do I need to reinstall drivers as written in your post again? Thanks.
